Breaking Dawn

The fourth and final installment of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series came out at 12:01 this morning. Is there anyone who has already started reading it?

RE: Breaking Dawn

I feel like I should read this series to see what the fuss is, but I'll confess it's not all that appealing. I'll definitely read at least the first one some day, though. I think books become such big hits for a reason, generally.

I read the thread title as 'breaking down' and I thought someone had finally crumbled under the pressure of 10-4-10...

I opened my latest 'club' e-mail from Borders Bookstores this morning. Guess I missed the midnight party at our local store last night. But it certainly had none of the mad pub that the recent Potter releases have had.

The first one is definitely worth reading. Once you've read that one, you might as well read the next ones, though they're somewhat disappointing after the first. I'll read this one too, but I'll wait to buy in when the discounted 'once-read' books start showing up on half.com.

I'm always breaking down in some area of my life or another, but it hasn't yet had anything to do with the 10-4-10.

I have a newfound ability to give up on a series partway through. I'm kinda proud of that. (Last exercised on the Maria V Snyder "Study" books.)

Holy mackerel! I just sent a book request in for Twilight and I'm 322nd on the list. 322nd! Whew!

'Breaking down' in personal life is nothing to be ashamed of.

Well, maybe if you do so in front of your cold, heartless co-workers or the checker at the 'box-n-save' . . .but you know what I mean.

But yes, certainly no need for 'breaking down' over 10-4-10... I save that for newbie 'express reviews'. But I never know if I should laugh or cry ...or occasionally jump up and down with joy.

OK, I had to go check our local system.

I would be number 37, much better than 300-something..!!

That with ten copies of the book in circulation.

While the audio CDs have of queue of nine with three in circulation.

Interesting.

RE: Breaking Dawn

I always have to cheer for local authors who make good, even if I'd rather swallow a live salamander than read their teen-girl-paranormal-romance books.

One of the funniest things I've read about the books is Charles de Lint's review of them for Fantasy and Science Fiction (April 2008).

"The passion is all chaste kisses and long romantic conversations. It's rather fascinating that these two teens . . . seem like characters from a Victorian novel . . ."

He attributes the fact that Meyer's characters don't drink, smoke or have sex to Meyer's being Mormon.

But then he admits "that isn't necessarily unrealistic. A lot of contemporary YA fiction features outsiders, but I'd say most kids don't live on the edge."

And, judging by Meyer’s sales, he's right. Not every teen is oversexed, overdrugged, abused or antisocial, or even enchanted by those who are.

But even such puritans think vampires are sexy.

I'd be #131 with 70 circulating copies. Not that I'd be the slightest bit interested, of course... (Andy says there's no sex)

That's something I'm never gonna get. Vampires. They have incredibly little appeal to me. I find the idea of vampires distasteful at best.

That isn't to say I've never liked a vampire story. The Angel series on TV was one of my favorites.

My girlfriend and I have this dispute all the time. Anytime there's a vampire and a werewolf, I find myself cheering for the wolf. (This issue does come up later in the Twilight series, and quite often in vampire stories in general I'm finding).

Have you read the Mercy Thompson books? I highly recommend them. The werewolves are still pretty annoying, but way better than, say, the vampires in the Kim Harrison books (yuck).

Hehe... my book pusher handed me that one in a brown paper bag. (Moon Called is the first, right?) She whispered that it was a much better book than the sexy cover would lead one to believe. And indeed it was. I liked the second one a lot too. Have there been more since then?

Gawd, how far we have...

...
Gawd. How far we have fallen.

Vampires vs werewolves. Books in brown paper bags. 'Chaste kisses and long romantic conversations.'

P.S. Hey drama... I am somewhat disappointed that you have not reviewed this one yet. But wait, guess what it is before you open it...

Wow. I was so caught on that one. I had clicked on it before reading the rest of the sentence. It was only in that split second before the new screen loaded that I saw your instructions to guess before opening.

Isn't that like putting a note inside the present that says "Wait until Christmas"?

There are three total. Yeah, the covers are... not indicative of the quality of the writing! Briggs has another series just coming out and the description sounds beyond awful, but she's already won me over so I have to follow her like a puppy. A puppy who can read.
