| godspeede's Full Review: Un Lobo En La Noche by Tatiana |
IN 1988,the year "Un Lobo En La Noche" was release, Tatiana was riding high as a Latina pop ingenue. Her audience was that vaguely defined group known as "young people" (perhaps 13 to 30), who were not judged, apparently, to have had much interest in traditional Latin music as the collection of songs presented here is essentially American pop/rock sung in Spanish. In terms of then contemporary bands, the music is somewhere between Pat Benatar, Quarterflash, and Olivia Newton-John with perhaps a bit of Loverboy thrown in. Seven of the ten numbers are straightahead rockers, and the remaining three are ballads with a beat. So with hindsight, how does this album stack up?
Well, there was a reason that Tatiana was a pop phenomenon with platinum albums. As with all of her projects, the production values are excellent. The music is played quite well, even brilliantly, and the arrangements are clever and creative. The songs themselves are well above average with typical themes of angst, insecurity, and sexual focus with titles like "Peligro en El Elevador" ("Danger in the Elevator", a good rocker), "No Tengo Novio" ("I have no Lover"), and, of course, "Un Lobo en la Noche" (The Wolf in the Night"), which given the fact that it appears on all of Tatiana's greatest hits packages must have been a hit song.
Tatiana herself was only nineteen and still more of a cute adolescent than the goddess that she has become, and her voice had yet to fully mature. She as yet had not mastered her highest range, and missing is her currently very effective use of "cornbread" (distortion of the voice common in blues-based music).Nonetheless, she sings well, with enthusiasm and skill, and her charisma is very much present.
I genuinely enjoy this album, and find myself listening to it much more than her subsequent "adult" efforts that are more directed to big ballads and torch singing. Of course,Tatiana is at her best today in her so-called "children's" music, which attracts an audience made up of as many adults as children! That said, I would sincerely urge anyone with an interest in Tatiana, or in just good 80s style rock, to pick this up. You will not be disappointed!
