In the 1980s Tatiana was a teenage Mexican pop ingenue who achieved some real measure of popularity and success. She not only received her share of gold and platinum albums but she also frequently performed on Mexican television. Despite early fame, however, by the early years of the next decade the machine was apparently winding down. Now a young adult, she attempted to make her image and music more mature. With her last "adult" album, Un Alma Desnuda (1994),for instance, she took on songs with themes about sex and relationships, and appeared topless (discreetly of course) in tight shorts on the cover.
By 1995, a remarkable transformation had taken place. Beginning with her appearances on ten-minute "capsules" on the Televista television network, Tatiana became La Reina de los Ninos (Queen of the children). The pop diva was gone. Now Tatiana appeared in what seems to be a modified Wonder Woman outfit, singing traditional Mexican children's songs in the style of a Hispanic Madonna. It was the beginning of a true phenomenon, one which has, for the most part, escaped us gringos in the frozen north. The capsules became a full hour show, featuring some of the best Latin musical artists around, while also including children's games, occasional videos, and the greatest treat, Tatiana herself. Soon there were Tatiana videos, Hasbro dolls, singalong cds, and animations. She became something of an acknowledged expert on children, giving intelligent interviews on the responsibilities of her own motherhood of her young daughter, Cassandra. Something of her status can be ascertained by the fact that she was asked along with Ricky Martin to sing on the Spanish version of the soundtrack of Disney's Hercules.
It was in the same year that she issued her first full-length "children's" album, Brinca! (Jump!). While some of her more recent work is a bit more sophisticated in the range of material selected(almost everything on Brinca! is public domain) production values, and Tatiana's own vocals, the album is a treasure! "En Patio De Mi Casa" inspired one her most successful videos, and has served as the basis for the theme song of her television show, "El Espacio de Tatiana", and it is served up in a typical "world-beat" mode, infectious and compelling. My favorite on the album is "El Gato Viudo", which is the only song with an author. It is about a cat, but it does not really matter. The tune and performance are so catchy, it could be about Grover Cleveland and still be interesting! Tatiana even manages to make a Spanish version of "Happy Birthday" fun and sexy.
It is only with Tatiana that I now fully understand how, for instance, so many non-English speakers could love the Beatles, simply based upon the appeal of the sound they produced. Brinca! and all of Tatiana's work is like that. Her appeal and charisma are truly remarkable. She has her fanatical followers among children, but a recent poll by Televista shows that some 75% of her viewers are over the age of ten. Perhaps this is because there are many, like myself, who see in Tatiana a vision of innocence, wholesome sexuality, and love missing in the world in which we are compelled to live. Looking for that sense of joyful possibility missing since childhood? Then come to Tatiana and Brinca! Chocolat!
