When I was a child I lived in Puerto Rico. Consequently, I was attracted to Univision's El Espacio de Tatiana (now missing in action despite its huge popularity). For one thing, I found the color and constant games, music, and activities reminiscent of my own childhood experiences in the Caribbean. For another, I was drawn nostalgically by the Hispanic cultural tendency (as revealed by the show) both to allow children to be children (without any expectations that they should be "cool") and to show great respect for the children as people.
Most importantly is Tatiana herself. Vivacious without being cloying, Tatiana entrances one with her energy and talent. She is a gifted vocalist, who, before this show began three years ago, was a pop singer with numerous gold and platinum albums. Her children's albums (I have managed to obtain three) are a mixture of the children's songs she features on the broadcast(many are adaptations of English ditties like "Purple People Eater"), and more adult-oriented material like the Mexican hit "Mexico". Her albums, like her show, are beautifully produced and highly professional. Also like her show, they are addictive, and I found myself going around the house singing "Old McDonald" in Spanish. She is most of all sexy. She is your big sister's best friend, or the senior cheerleader when you were a freshman in high school.
Nor is language any barrier to enjoying the show. My Spanish is weak but it is no obstacle. A girlfriend of mine works in a daycare and took a tape of the show for Hispanic week or something into work, and the English-speaking children all loved it. Of course, the show is more than just Tatiana and her dancing and singing. She surrounds herself with a multitude of characters who collectively enhance the pace of things. She also features videos by young girls and boy groups. Not to gush, but I have become a major fan of this children's show and its star (I tape it every week for greater perusal). Frankly, given the current state of television, it stands as one of the more positive events of my television week.
